Read more below ...
SIZE : Each flag should be made from a piece of fabric the size of an A4 page which is about 8½ in × 11in or 21cm x 30cm. The theme of your design should be Medieval.
HINTS & TIPS : If you cut your fabric with a sharp pair of scissors it will prevent it fraying as much (although we don’t mind fraying) or you could use a pair of pinking shear scissors if you have a pair. Adult supervision should be used if children are handling scissors.
Plain light colour fabrics work best if you are using fabric paint or markers but you can use any colour you want.
An old pillowcase or sheet cut up can be recycled to use for your flag. You could also use a piece of material you like or a piece of material that means something to you. You could use more than one piece of fabric to create a collage or patchwork effect.
You could decorate your flag with embellishments such as buttons, embroidery, ribbon, sequins etc. Just let your imagination go and see what colourful and unique designs you can come up with.
If you don’t want to draw or paint a design you could use stamping, stencilling or printing
A great design can be creating your own shield. Use a saucer, small plate, cups, egg cups etc to draw your shield shape onto your fabric flag and then create your own design inside this shape.
You could design your own medieval crest. We have included some sample crest shapes or you could come up with your own unique design.
Other design ideas are castles, princesses, knights, medieval warriors, medieval weapons or medieval costumes and jewellery
This project is open to everyone of all ages and all abilities. You don’t have to be from Wicklow Town to take part in this project. We would love to have flags from different Counties in Ireland or from Different Countries. You could try to get family members from around Ireland or further afield to be involved.
Here are some of our community art projects from past festivals, some of which will be on display again in 2015 - what a fantastic collection!
